Long before the printing press, before the university, before the cathedral โ people pressed their questions into the earth and read the patterns that emerged. Geomancy is one of the oldest and most widespread divination systems in human history, crossing cultures and centuries with a resilience that suggests it answers something fundamental in the human need to know.
What Is Geomancy?
Geomancy (from Greek gฤ, earth, and manteia, divination) is the art of reading figures generated from random marks in earth, sand, dots on paper, or the casting of objects. The system works by generating a sequence of odd or even results โ binary decisions โ which combine into symbolic figures that carry meaning.
The core technique produces sixteen possible figures, each made of four rows of dots (one or two per row). These sixteen figures form the vocabulary of European and Arabic geomancy, and variants of the same fundamental system appear across sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and the Islamic world.
Historical Origins and Transmission
Arabic Roots: 'Ilm al-Raml
Geomancy as a formal system appears to have crystallized in the Arab world sometime in the early medieval period (8thโ10th centuries CE), where it was known as 'Ilm al-Raml โ "the science of sand." Arabic scholars systematized what may have been older techniques into the 16-figure system with its elaborate chart (the Shield).
The legendary origin attributes the system's transmission to the angel Gabriel, who taught it to the prophet Idris (identified with Hermes/Enoch). Whether myth or transmission history, this association gave geomancy a sacred pedigree in the Islamic world.
European Medieval Transmission
Geomancy entered Europe through the great translation movements of the 11thโ13th centuries, as Arabic texts poured into Latin through Toledo and Sicily. Works attributed to Hugo Sanctelliensis, Gerard of Cremona, and others brought 'Ilm al-Raml into Latin as geomantia.
Cornelius Agrippa (1486โ1535) provided the most influential European systematization in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1531), including a full account of the sixteen figures, their planetary and zodiacal associations, and the Shield chart method. Agrippa's work became the reference text for Western geomancy into the Renaissance and beyond.
The system also appears in Robert Fludd, John Dee's circle, and various Renaissance magical handbooks. Christopher Cattan's Geomancy (1558) was particularly influential in popularizing the art.
African Traditions
The same fundamental 16-figure binary system appears independently โ or was transmitted long before recorded history โ throughout sub-Saharan Africa, where it developed into distinct but structurally related traditions:
The African Traditions
Ifรก (Yoruba)
Ifรก is the divination system of the Yoruba people of West Africa (primarily present-day Nigeria, Benin, and Togo) and their diaspora throughout the Americas (as Candomblรฉ, Lucumรญ/Santerรญa, Trinidad Orisha, and others).
The 256 Odรน: While the Arabic/European system works with 16 figures, Ifรก extends the binary system one step further: 16 ร 16 = 256 Odรน, each a vast corpus of oral literature containing stories, proverbs, medicinal knowledge, spiritual prescriptions, and moral teaching. Each Odรน is associated with specific Orishas (divine forces), taboos, sacrifices, and life themes.
The Babalawo: The Ifรก diviner is the Babalawo (Father of Secrets) โ a specialist who undergoes years of initiation and memorization. A skilled Babalawo carries the entire corpus of 256 Odรน orally, including thousands of associated verses (ese Ifรก) for each. This represents one of the most remarkable feats of oral literature in human history.
Divination Process: The Babalawo uses either the opele (divining chain) or ikin (palm nuts) to generate a pattern, which is marked in iyerosun (sacred wood dust) on a divination tray (opon Ifรก). The pattern indicates which Odรน has been called, and the Babalawo then recites relevant verses, the client identifies which verse speaks to their situation, and prescriptions (ebรณ, or sacrifice/remedy) are given.
In 2005, UNESCO recognized Ifรก as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Sikidy (Madagascar)
The Malagasy divination system of Sikidy (from Arabic azzahr, dice) arrived with the Austronesian and Swahili trade networks and developed into a distinctly Malagasy form using seeds (typically fano seeds or beans).
The Sikidy matrix: The Sikidy generates a 4ร4 matrix of seeds in groups of odd (1) or even (2), then combines rows to generate figures in a manner parallel to the Arabic shield chart but structured according to Malagasy cosmological directions.
The Ombiasy (diviner-healer) reads the resulting patterns according to an extensive traditional corpus. Sikidy combines divination with medical diagnosis, agricultural timing, and the determination of fady (taboos). It remains actively practiced in Madagascar today.

The Shield Chart: Full Casting Method
The European geomantic Shield chart generates 16 figures from 4 original "Mothers" through a systematic process of combination.
Step 1: Generate the Four Mothers
Using any random method (traditional: make random rows of marks in sand or on paper; modern: rolling dice, using a random number generator):
For each Mother, make four rows of random marks. Count each row: odd number of marks = single dot (โฆ); even number = two dots (โฆโฆ).
This gives you four figures, each with four rows. These are your Four Mothers (Prima, Secunda, Tertia, Quarta).
Step 2: Generate the Four Daughters
Daughters are formed by reading the Mothers by row rather than by figure: - First Daughter: Row 1 of all four Mothers (combined) - Second Daughter: Row 2 of all four Mothers - Third Daughter: Row 3 of all four Mothers - Fourth Daughter: Row 4 of all four Mothers
Step 3: Generate the Four Nieces (Nephews)
Nieces are formed by adding pairs of figures together (row by row): - First Niece: Mother 1 + Mother 2 - Second Niece: Mother 3 + Mother 4 - Third Niece: Daughter 1 + Daughter 2 - Fourth Niece: Daughter 3 + Daughter 4
Addition rule: odd + odd = even (two dots); odd + even = odd (one dot); even + even = even (two dots)
Step 4: Generate the Two Witnesses
- Right Witness: Niece 1 + Niece 2
- Left Witness: Niece 3 + Niece 4
Step 5: Generate the Judge
- Judge: Right Witness + Left Witness
The Judge is the overall verdict on the question. A favorable Judge figure (Fortuna Major, Acquisitio, Laetitia, etc.) suggests a favorable outcome; an unfavorable one (Rubeus, Tristitia, Carcer) suggests otherwise.
Step 6: The Reconciler (optional)
- Reconciler: Judge + First Mother
This figure represents the ultimate synthesis โ the deeper meaning beneath the Judge's verdict.
The Shield Layout
[M1][M2][M3][M4] โ Four Mothers
[D1][D2][D3][D4] โ Four Daughters
[N1][N2][N3][N4] โ Four Nieces
[RW] [LW] โ Right/Left Witnesses
[J] โ Judge
[Rc] โ Reconciler
The Twelve House Chart
For detailed readings, the sixteen generated figures are placed in a twelve-house chart (analogous to an astrological chart), with each house governing a domain of life:
| House | Domain |
|---|---|
| 1st | Self, appearance, beginnings, the querent |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, resources |
| 3rd | Siblings, communication, short journeys |
| 4th | Home, father, roots, land, property |
| 5th | Children, creativity, pleasure, romance |
| 6th | Health, servants, work, small animals |
| 7th | Partner, marriage, open enemies |
| 8th | Death, inheritance, transformation, partner's resources |
| 9th | Long journeys, religion, higher education, prophecy |
| 10th | Career, reputation, mother, authority |
| 11th | Friends, allies, hopes |
| 12th | Secrets, enemies, imprisonment, hidden things |
The figures are placed in houses 1โ12 in order of generation (Mothers in houses 1, 2, 3, 4; Daughters in 5, 6, 7, 8; Nieces in 9, 10, 11, 12). The Witnesses and Judge are not placed in houses โ they stand apart as the overall verdict.
The reader then examines: which figures appear in houses relevant to the question, how they interact, and what the Judge and Witnesses say overall.
Reading the Chart
Favorable vs. Unfavorable Figures: - Always favorable: Fortuna Major, Fortuna Minor, Acquisitio, Laetitia, Puella, Conjunctio, Albus, Caput Draconis (for beginnings) - Always unfavorable: Rubeus, Carcer, Tristitia, Amissio (generally), Cauda Draconis (for most matters) - Neutral (context-dependent): Via, Populus, Puer, Conjunctio
Company: Figures that appear next to each other in the chart interact, modifying each other's meaning.
Perfection: The reading is said to "perfect" (confirm a positive outcome) when certain specific configurations occur โ particularly when the same figure appears in the 1st house (querent) and 7th house (queried matter or opponent), or when they are in mutual reception.
Closing Reflection
Geomancy is simultaneously one of the most intellectually rigorous divination systems (its systematic generation of figures from random data, its twelve-house interpretation framework, its logical verdict system) and one of the most widespread โ appearing in Arabic, European, West African, East African, and Malagasy traditions in recognizably related forms.
Its resilience speaks to something deep: the idea that randomness, properly attended, becomes meaningful pattern; that the present moment contains all the information needed to understand it; that the earth โ pressed, marked, and read โ will speak.
The marks you make in the sand are already you. The answer is already there.
